About the Book

Picture
Awakening in the Northwest Territories is an inspirational, humorous and absorbing account of one Boomer’s transformative life journey over a sixty year period.

Follow Alastair’s story from his strict Catholic upbringing in England to Canada by himself at the age of 19, where over the next forty years, he has a family, climbs the corporate ladder and builds up a flourishing business, which subsequently fails.

He takes an early retirement and goes to live in the country in an idyllic retreat. But a year later, feeling unfulfilled and asking himself the aged old questions: "Is this it. Is this all there? he makes a conscious decision to lead the examined life by going to
live with a small First Nations band in a remote fly-in community in Canada's Northwest Territories. Cultural differences and a challenging environment fuel his soul-searching, cause a paradigm shift in his understanding of the world and inspire a new way of being.

“Awakening in the Northwest Territories” provides the reader with insightful accounts of the culture and traditions of the Chipewyans who live in that harsh, northern climate, and of their struggles to conform to western ways while trying to maintain their traditional customs and beliefs.

“Awakening in the Northwest Territories” is the first book in the "Boomers' Adventures" series.

Book Two is "Go For It - Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Traveled"
When Alastair came out of the north, motivated and energized to help others less fortunate, he went to Bangladesh and Nigeria, to work as a volunteer with local NGOs in those countries.

He then met Candas, fell in love, and with a shared passion for life, set off on a new path of travel and adventure. They shed their material possessions and comfortable Canadian lifestyle to volunteer with local non-governmental organizations in Jamaica and Guyana, and in between assignments, backpacked extensively throughout Central America and S. E. Asia on roads less travelled.

They wrote about
their experiences, adventures and learnings in "Go For It'  in the hope that they inspire other Boomers seeking adventure and a deeper meaning to life to “GO FOR IT.”
